Re: Cheryl Stone - Council Candidate
Cheryl has been working behind the scenes with so many community organizations and has really given a lot to our community. Maybe she doesn't have many comments because she's not as controversial as some of the other candidates. Voting for Cheryl will get you a hard worker who is dedicated to helping make Kelowna a better place. She stands on her record of community involvement and deserves support.

Please list 5 of your top priorities, and how you would deal with each issue if it were completely up to you.

2008 Election Concerns
Support our local workforce by encouraging more and better employment locally. We depend on our local governments to stand up for the rights of working families and give us access to the services we need. We need to elect local politicians who will advocate on behalf of our citizens, at the local, provincial and federal levels for more money for our cities. I will advocate for these issues in this economic crisis and work hard toward solutions.
Affordable Housing – We need a larger percentage of rental units. Most low income families cannot afford to purchase or even qualify for a mortgage for a large enough home to support their needs, in this economy. The city needs to play an active role in drawing provincial and federal funds for core-need housing.
Smart and positive growth, Promote the “town centre” approach to urban development, supporting careful economic development to benefit the community while maintaining a balance between growth an environmental protection. Development must be sustainable. The way development is managed will have a huge impact on our quality of life. We must follow the LEED format (leadership in energy and environmental design) and continue to question all development in our community. We MUST challenge ourselves as a council to ensure that all growth is balanced and benefits the long term needs and reflects the goals of our citizens.
Promote two-way communication between our municipality and citizens: Plan for regularly scheduled community conversations involving, local governance, businesses and citizens. We MUST encourage more community involvement and solidarity to find solutions to the serious issues that we face today.
Safer public community areas: Continued efforts in eliminating crime & drugs in our streets.
Development in the downtown core, beautifying the streets, with attractive small shops, businesses, restaurants, etc. will attract locals and tourists to the area thereby, hopefully chasing out the existing crime in the area.
Environmental issues: We MUST have the highest level of commitment to the environment, to personal and community ecology and to a sustainable way of life. Global warming, supporting increased green space, protection of our water front for public use. Improve our quality of life with clean air and water. We MUST reduce greenhouse gases and smog by improving and increasing public transit, better bike/walk paths, encourage more bicycle lock up stations.
Work with all levels of government to increase and support programming for children/women of abuse and violence.
Transportation: We MUST apply continued efforts to solve the traffic congestion within our city.
The new bridge is only one part of this solution.

I want to know specifically, what your choice is on the CD Zone. Will you support the current council decision or do you want to see changes? The second question is with regard to the ALR
Agricultural Land Reserve do you support it?

Re: Cheryl Stone - Council Candidate
Concerning the CD zone, I would like to see some changes to this proposal. It is too Vancouverish for my taste, I am in agreement with the clean up and development, but not with the exisiting suggestions of the tall buildings.
Regarding ALR lands, I do not agree to give it up for development, we are an orchard and farming area and we need to preserve our lands for this purpose. We must think of the future generations and preserve the land.
