Thanks again. You have my vote. Now I just have to figure out a few others...

I reread my post. There were a couple typos that may have thrown off my meaning. I think that is when my dinner was ready!

Thank you for your responses to my questions on property taxes. I was particulary interested in the question of property taxes because I was surprised at how high they were here when I first moved here 5 years ago, and they seem to keep going up steadily.

I agree with tax exemptions for non-profits, but also agree with your comments on tax exemptions not being fair when it gives an unfair advantage to some businesses over others.

Hello Castanet Forum Participants,

Just a quick update on the recent Mayor and Council Candidate forums. I was very happy to see such a large turnout on Wednesday and Thursday night. After seeing the forums we would all agree that we have some very good candidates in the running and I congratulate them all for putting their names forward.

Quite a few people stayed and had questions about my platform as I only had a short time and did not go over each one in detail. To remedy that I have a two minute video that does. It is:

Please check it out and feel free to pass it on to your friends and associates- thanks!

Dear Castanet.net Friends,

I (and my campaign team) apologize for this general (and partisan) post but we cannot reach all of you individually during this very busy time.

As you know, I am running to be a Penticton city councillor. I am a long time Penticton resident and business owner, a family man and a proud volunteer. I am privileged to have this opportunity and grateful to serve a community which I am so proud of.

My campaign had a tremendous start by our election sign coverage and shaping the agenda: many candidates are now talking about reigning in spending, public safety concerns (such as chronically understaffed fire department) and focusing on customer service at city hall. But there is much more to be done- we can’t do it alone, not without your help.

To be successfully elected, we need a grassroots, person to person approach. I know that many of you would like to help out, but lack the time. To make it easier, my team has put together three short video links to my website- please email this letter (or make up your own letter then cutting and pasting the links) to your entire contact list and invite them to watch videos and send it to their entire contact list.

What kind of difference can you make? Let’s try and see if we can be the change we say we want.

The video links:

Dan Albas: reasons for running- http://www.danalbas.com/dan_intro_2.php
Dan Albas: platform- http://www.danalbas.com/dan_intro_3.php

It is our hope that no matter your political background or beliefs, that you believe that I would make an effective councillor and would serve our community well.

This is our moment. This is our opportunity to connect to democracy in a very personal way – through your vote and support for me, Dan Albas on November 15th.

I will have an opportunity to thank you (hopefully in person) after the campaign is over.

But on the evening of November 15th, you can view the election results on TV with a quiet satisfaction that at least in Penticton, you made all the difference.

Thank you.

sincerely,

Dan Albas

Candidates outline priorities

Dan Albas

From day one, my campaign team and I have been busy door knocking and speaking with Penticton residents about what is important to them in the upcoming election.

The No. 1 issue at people’s doors is the high level of taxation in Penticton. Over the past year we have all seen increased costs. This leaves many people with limited income facing those rising costs, leaving less and less disposable income. In addition, the worldwide economic uncertainty has left many with savings and investments feeling like they may have to put off retirement. A recent report put out by the Canadian Federation of Independent business found that Penticton has the second highest taxes per capita (every man, woman and child) in B.C. Using City of Penticton’s own numbers that were given to the provincial government, only West Vancouver had a higher per capita. Most cities close to our size collect between a $1,000 - $1,100 per person; Penticton came in at $1,656. Many of those communities are offering much of the same services- at a lower price.
We need to change our thinking on spending priorities at city hall. We cannot spend what we can’t afford during these economically challenging times.

The October All Candidates' meeting stunned me, even though I have known and worked with Dan Albas for over two years.
Dan was the leader of all city council candidates in terms of 1) clear, direct answers to questions, 2) knowledge of pertinent facts, 3) creative, reasonable solutions, and 4) sound vision for the future of Penticton. Dan understood the issues in as much detail as the incumbents, and had far better solutions in mind.
In addition, he was courteous and positive in his comments to and about the other candidates. A real team builder.
These traits are all perfectly consistent with what I had observed previously, but were demonstrated to a degree which I had not seen previously.
If I was allowed only one vote on the 15th, I would cast it for Dan Albas for city council.
