If YOU had a say in a new "Holy Book".

Post by Tumult »

I haven't thought about this much as it came to me at work today but I wanted to get it posted before I forgot. Hypothetical Situation.

Some dramatic change to the spiritual journeys of a major portion of the world takes place in or around 2012. Three to four hundred years later you are part of a council whose job is to decide which works get included in the official "Holy Book" (of most of the World). Nobody knows for sure what really happened back around 2012 and for whatever reason the texts or info available to you is from 1900-now(2008). Which works or whose teachings would you bring, and/or do you think would be brought to the council table for inclusion?

Here's some fast thoughts I had about what might be brought to the table:

Maybe there would be someone bringing forth info from David Icke and/or Alex Jones as the "new" apocalyptic Revelations? He he :137: :200:

The words of Oprah's prophet Eckhart Tolle?
The Gospel of Deepak Chopra perhaps?
Mere Christianity (C.S. Lewis)?
Neale Donald Walsch's Conversations with God?
Alan Watts? Terrance Mckenna?
Perhaps there would be followers of David Wilcox?

I think The Brain that Changes Itself (Norman Doidge) would be a good source material for inclusion in a new "Holy Book".

Another thing to ponder is what modern song lyrics (Psalms) would you include?

I thought of:

You Can’t Do That To Me. (Bob Marley)

One near or far is seeking
What out there looking for, I don’t know
But if you find it, please won’t you tell me so…oh yeah
Now every young folk, throughout the land
Looking for someone, who understand

But all the older ones, they just reminisce
Talking bout the good ol’ days, that they miss

See how blind ya been
See how the world ya livin’ in is changing…Lord have mercy

All around us is ah greed & hate
We better wake up or soon it’ll be too late

I guess what they want,
is some peace of mind
but I know it’s very, hard to find
No, you can’t borrow it, from a friend
Peace of mind got to come, from within

We oughta stop and think
The signs show the brink of destruction

Would everybody, stop to take heed
Or help someone who really really need it

See how confused you are
Everyone near or far is seeking
What out there looking for, I don’t know
But if you find it, please won’t you tell me so

See how blind ya been
See how the world ya livin’ in is changing

All around us is ah greed & hate
We better wake up or soon it’ll be too late

We oughta stop and think
signs show the brink of destruction…..

The new "Holy Book" could have a section expounding the virtues of "don't ask, don't tell."

And could it ressurrect the bits about Reincarnation censored out in the first version?

How some scripture from Brave New World, for Ford sake:

Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun,
Kiss the girls and make them one.
Boys at one with girls at peace;
Orgy-porgy gives release.

I'll comment more in depth on this later, but my first thought is a big label on it that says "Subject to translation". Just so we can avoid the confusion created over the last book. :D

It could have one of those CDs in a back pocket with John Lennon's, "Imagine."

Good Idea. Reality is Individual Perception. :)

If I had a say it'd be full of holes.

Ok folks, lets try a slightly different approach. I think if the new book was clear, concise and more of a How To guide for living, containing To Dos there would be little to no need for a cover full of warnings.

I'll throw a Bill & Ted How To out there: Be Excellent To Each Other.

Preface should read: This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are the product of the author's imagination or are used fictiously and any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, businesses, companies, events or locales is entirely coincidental.
