Yes, almost all clocks do not have crystals, but instead rely on the frequency of the electricity supply to keep time. That 0.3 Hz change means the clocks are 0.5% faster than they should be, which adds up after a while.

Hmm, I thought that most of the 'electric' alarm clocks had battery back-up, or at the very least a capacitor that could store a few minutes worth of energy(for quick power disruptions). If this is the case then they most certainly will have a crystal oscillator of some kind for secondary time control. The easiest test for the capacitor theory would be to pull the plug for a minute or so and see if the clock resets to 12:00 or not.

Yup, my clock runs on an internal oscillation circuit of some kind. It has battery backup, but if you had one without some sort of battery backup it would probably synchronize with the AC signal. Not too sure how many clocks do this, but enough for it to make news on CBC.

I haven't seen Steven Lloyd on here for a couple of days, perhaps his clock is moving too fast for him to find time to join us.
