Perry Marshall says he can prove God exists

Post by Tumult »

The gist of his argument is that DNA is a code or language and that all codes and/or languages are created by a mind....

Claim CB180:
The genetic code is a language in the normal sense of the term, since it assigns meaning to arbitrary symbols. Language is obviously a non-material category of reality; the symbolic information is distinct from matter and energy. Therefore, life is a manifestation of non-material reality.

Response:

1. The genetic code is not a true code; it is more of a cypher. DNA is a sequence of four different bases (denoted A, C, G, and T) along a backbone. When DNA gets translated to protein, triplets of bases (codons) get converted sequentially to the amino acids that make up the protein, with some codons acting as a "stop" marker. The mapping from codon to amino acid is arbitrary (not completely arbitrary, but close enough for purposes of argument). However, that one mapping step -- from 64 possible codons to 20 amino acids and a stop signal -- is the only arbitrariness in the genetic code. The protein itself is a physical object whose function is determined by its physical properties.

Furthermore, DNA gets used for more than making proteins. Much DNA is transcribed directly to functional RNA. Other DNA acts to regulate genetic processes. The physical properties of the DNA and RNA, not any arbitrary meanings, determine how they act.

An essential property of language is that any word can refer to any object. That is not true in genetics. The genetic code which maps codons to proteins could be changed, but doing so would change the meaning of all sequences that code for proteins, and it could not create arbitrary new meanings for all DNA sequences. Genetics is not true language.

2. The word frequencies of all natural languages follow a power law (Zipf's Law). DNA does not follow this pattern (Tsonis et al. 1997).

3. Language, although symbolic, is still material. For a word to have meaning, the link between the word and its meaning has to be recorded somewhere, usually in people's brains, books, and/or computer memories. Without this material manifestation, language cannot work.

What encouraged me about Jeffrey’s statement was that even Jeffrey, as an atheist, recognized the equation, Big Bang = Jesus Christ. If you prove the Big Bang, you prove Jesus Christ.
This is really what fostered the birth of Darwinian evolution, the idea that the universe is static, infinitely old and infinitely large.
If the universe is fine-tuned in one part to the 10 to the 37th power, one part in 10 to the 40th power and one part in 10 to the 55th power on three different characteristics, then that tells us that God must be personal; that He’s not only transcendent, he’s personal!
Don Page, who had daily Bible studies with Steven and Jane Hawking while he was doing research pointed out, if you prove that time has a beginning, that it was created, it eliminates all theological possibilities but Jesus Christ.
Why? Because if you were to open up the Holy books of the religions of the world, only one of them would describe God as a being that creates the universe independent of time, space, matter and energy.
The other Holy books describe God as creating within time. The Bible states that God creates independent of time. That’s the difference.
Some versus that you might be familiar with. The first verse which states, “In the Beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth…” The Hebrew words for heavens and Earth literally refer to the entire physical cosmos of matter, energy space and time.
Hebrews 11:3 makes it more specific stating, “The universe that we detect was made from that which we cannot detect.” We can make detections within matter, energy, length, width, height and time, but not beyond.

Is that the best you can do tumult? You have dropped some fractally incorrect links there. Quit trying to shoehorn the god into the gaps.

Why? There isn't a debate or argument of any kind going on here.

What we have is OP ambiguously posting a snippet and link to a guys website, this guy (PM) hasn't the faintest idea of what evidence is, he is being willfully ignorant of the meaning of many 'facts' that he brings up. Every paragraph contains a logical fallacy or two, or three.

After listening, for what seemed like hours, to his streaming audio lecture and reading through some of his material I can conclude only two things: he only has one point/argument and it has zero evidence to support it, not a gram of traditional/real evidence.

Now if someone on the forum wants to take what his side and perhaps refine/repackage some of his fluff, feel 100% free, I'll debate any forum member and give them my full respect and empathy.

In regards to PM, I don't feel compelled in the slightest to do anything more than point out his foolishness.

No doubt, the only reason I posted in this thread was to boost OP's self-esteem, nothing worse than a DOA thread.

Dude ur poster is *bleep* huge man!

Also, Nibs, if you want to see pwnage layed down by the Rebel Alliance there are far better threads to find examples than this one.

I can appreciate not only the applicability of your chosen image but also the need for it to not fit the frame.
