Random breathalyzer tests considered for Canada

Concerning the argument that being at home and being in public is different (you're driving on a public road, therefore have no right to privacy), what about walking down a public sidewalk? Should police be able to randomly stop you on a sidewalk and frisk you, in case you are carrying a concealed weapon?

Then again, don't the RCMP and Coast Guard have the authority to pull your boat over and conduct an inspection at any time?

Actually, that is a very good point. I don't hear anyone crying about being checked over before they get on a plane.

I always find it disturbing that after all those security checks, whenever I'm sitting in a plane before takeoff the door to the cockpit is WIDE OPEN! Anyone could run upfront and hijack the plane pretty easily I'd think... am I just missing something or is that not absurd?

The people supporting this I haven't heard answer that part, You are fine with a random breathalizer, would you be ok with a full body search on the corner of Gorden and Bernard "just in case you had drugs on you"?

If not why not? Isn't getting drugs off our streets important enough to you? After all what do you have to worry about unless you have drugs on you?

A minor inconvenience that as a law biding citizen i am willing to go through if it means cleaning up our streets and making them a safer place for all to enjoy.

Anything has to be better than the way things are in certain areas of town(any town) on any given night.

Most people are to afraid to enter into certain areas whether it be during day light hours or at night well especially at night and making these areas safer for all to enjoy should be a priority by any means necessary.

Again a minor inconvenience for most law biding citizens.

Except for Costco, where else can you get a free frisk?

I've been frisked at the entrance of sporting events, and had my purse searched. It was rather impersonal, and it happened to everyone. Outside food and drink was confiscated.

Well actually I do. Govt intereference in other countries is the reason for this, it is they who started it and put our lives in danger. To me just as reckless as DD.

As for me, I don't think I want to be randomly patted down, or cavity checked when going for a walk in the park.

Never have been humiliated i have been searched many years ago and had nothing to hide or worry about.

I guess it comes down to choice and those of us that have nothing to hide or worry about are fine with this if it makes the streets a safer place while the ones who have something to hide while not so fine with this.

My experience with cops has been treat them with respect and they will show you respect.

Nope. Closest was a rather rough (female) security guard at a sporting event. She found a half empty bottle of coke in my purse and chucked it in the trash. I guess she didn't like the look on my face because she said "rules are rules, they are posted clearly". I felt a little injured by her brusqueness (I'm used to people liking me, I like being liked) but it took me about 5 minutes to get over it.

Although from the way you are speaking, it makes me wonder if perhaps you had a rather bad experience that is colouring your reaction to all this?

My thought is if it helps get the drunks off the roads then a minor inconvenience to me is worth the effort.

I would think of it as doing my part in making the roads a safer place.

Public roads to me are fair game, my private home on the other hand is a different story.

I can see why some feel so strongly about random checks i probably would have felt the same way in my younger years.

However the older i get the more i see that these types of things just may be a necessary evil.
