No. Their reasons for attacking Pearl Harbor were political, not religious.

Some Japanese are Christians too.

Shintoism is almost exclusively a Japanese religion with origins in prehistoric times. Buddhism same to Japan in the sixth century. So no, Shintoism is not an offshoot of Buddhism.

Western forces in the middle east are not there motivated by religious reasons either regardless of what twisted spin might be attached to some scripture refferences inscribed on scopes. I don't personally think this should have been done either but really:

would the presence or absence of these inscriptions affect the marksmanship of the user? - no

would their presence or absence actually have an effect on whether or not the next generation of west hating islamofacists join "the cause" or not? - no

It is a plot to convert the Afghans by this simple 5 step program:

1) Build schools so the Afghans learn to read.
2) Eventually, you get them to learn to read and write English as well.
3) Put the U.S. solders in harms way so they get captured and their guns confiscated.
4) Plant Bibles on these soldiers, so that the Taliban confiscates these as well.
5) Encourage the increased production and use mind altering drugs so they will eventually get some crazy notion to read the writing on the scopes.

Maybe not, but it certainly will, at minimum, be a piece of information tucked away in their propaganda folder. I see this 'bible scope' issue being tucked somewhere between being a non-issue or harmful to our goals in Afghanistan.
