ON the other hand I think the well should have had some type lid or cap that shouldn't have allowed the run off to get in the opening.
Run off is not supposed to happen until spring.

Next time, we'll get all the Lavington farmers to contact you and you can give exact, detailed weather reports about the future with your crystal ball.![]()

You really don't need to have such an obnoxious attitude, there was rain forecasted and we had already been in a "meltdown" for a week.
But I though this thread was about "how" the water got contaminated and the fact of the matter is the water became contaminated with manure and I don't need to be a farmer to know that. because i'm draining my hot water tank now and I can smell it

Re: Lavington contaminated waters
I support farming. I know where my food comes from I buy my beef from a local farm and my pork locally I raise my own chickens. I"m not concerned about it interupting my beauty sleep as you so eloquently put it. What I am concerned about is why there weren't enough safe guards put in ( by the city) to protect our water. Because as much as I value my food source watching my two year old with a fever wondering if this is teething or an ecoli infection because he brushed his teeth before I knew the water was deadly is much more important.
And I"m glad everyone has a safe water supply today.

Re: Lavington contaminated waters
An interesting fact: Coldstream Creek (which I runs beside this well) is one the 10 most polluted rivers in the Province.
It is at least as likely that the contamination came from cows doing what they do in their pasture, as it is from spread manure on the hay field. Not really much you can do about it with a well located there - manure flows right over the creek because it is iced over and right into the well.
As it stands, it looks like NORD is moving to abandoning the Antwerp source.

The North Okanagan Regional District is switching thousands of Coldstream customers over to Duteau Creek as a result of the ground well source being contaminated a week ago.
“It could be a permanent situation,” said Rod Kray, the regional district’s general manager of engineering.

Re: Lavington contaminated waters
Watch these videos from CHBC, there are four of them.
http://www.chbcnews.ca/Drink+Water+orde ... story.html
The farmer or farm worker himself says they have a permit.
We are not all city folk that live in the affected area.
As has been stated before this is a result of a bunch of contributing factors all happening at once. Frozen ground, warm weather causing melting conditions, cow crap, permits granted by government agencies, lots of rain and a well that is not in the ideal location or protected enough to prevent this from happening.

If the farmer was playing by the rules, had all permits in place and wasn't doing anything he hasn't done before, WHY ARE YOU ALL SO MAD AT HIM AND READY TO STRING HIM UP!?!?!?!?

Re: Lavington contaminated waters
Perhaps not mad at the farmer but mad at the system for not protecting a valuable water source. He just happens to be the source of the problem.
This should never happen near any water source. It is very kucky that there have not been a bunch of people terribly sick because of this. This is the type of thing that can lead to a lot of people getting extremely sick and possibly even dying.
It is amazing to think that the slightest problem with anything in the water and people are put onto a boil water notice but yet somehow a farmer is allowed to cover a field this close to a water supply in crap. I have said this to several people, "he is doing things by the rules he is given, if he has a permit and follows the rules of that permit, you cannot fault him."
I usually don't pay much attention to the boil water advisories but after seeing and smelling what was coming out of my taps I didn't need anyone to tell me not to use it.

Chances are the farm was there far longer than the houses serviced by the well.

I am amazed that contamination has not been happening with this well for a long time how. I check the site via Google maps the well in question is surrounded by farms. Not only by the spreading of manure on the fields as well as chemical fertilizer and/or some farmers spray crops weed control. Which we never did.

Now thats the dumbest post i have seen on the whole forum. Some of U posters seem to me to be as ignorant as the dumb *bleep* farmer that caused the problem???
this is 2010 not 1929?/ we have people living in mass in this area.I dont give a dahm if farmers used to do this before anyone lived here!! the dumb *bleep* farmer does not own the whole dahm county and water system and has no more rights in this situation than u and i do.
He made a very bad mistake and needs to make major changes to his farming methods !! end of story.
The farmer did everything according to government regulations. What is so "dumb" or irresponsible about that?
If you don't like, move back to the city.
FWIW, my water was affected too.

well commen sence would tell me and most people that you dont spread manure on land that has its water shed running into a main water well area.To me its as much the water authoritys fault as it is the Farmers fault.U have to be aware of your surrounding and possible consequences of your actions like it or not.

First off, let it go.
Secondly, he's been doing this way for YEARS. Do you hear me? YEARS with no consequences. Manure is spread in the fall. So, if you can see into the future, maybe YOU should be consulting the farmer next fall.
Common sense would be you packing your bags and going back to what ever city you came from.

fritsthedog I think U missed my point completely.I never disputed the "when the maure was put there" also The land has not been owned for "years".I believe its around 7 years or so
My point was and is that maybe ALL partys involved should start paying attention to the consequences of these sort of actions. For Christs sake man Kineshanko logging got fined 20K 15 years ago for simply driving a cat through a creekbed that really affected NOTHING and was way way up in the bush so yes farmers in town in direct contact with my drinking water should not be dumping cow chit on any field untill one knows what the future will bring

If I understand you what you are say is farming should not use land around water source I have no problem with that. But those who get their water from that source (water authority in this case) would have to reimburse that farmer or outrightly buy the land in question. It would be like telling retailer this area of your store must not that any items for sale in it.
