I am surprised they haven't gotten all of the doctors volunteering in Haiti to unionize by now and go on strike. I am so fed up with this BS from Quebec - that whole province needs a giant wake up call.

Now you're opening up a whole new pile of go %$#@ yourself.
This isn't about Quebec, french canadians, geography.

sorry but this is no coincidence that the doctors are from Quebec. Same reason it's no coincidence that Walmart has to keep opening and closing stores in Quebec due to the fact that the workers always immediately try to unionize when they open a store there. The people there have been handed things by the government for so long that they've forgotten how the real world actually works.

not getting into the quebecois looking out for themselve bit with you. not here anyways.
Doctors who volunteer should do it during their own vacation time.

I don’t think Quebec sucks at all.

I was only questioning whether or not Quebec would be so keen on considering this program if they received less Federal equalization transfer payments as a result. Given that one of the core issues around this situation is having the funds to pay for it and also considering that Quebec receives equalization transfer funds than it only stands to reason that questioning expenditures that actually pay for these programs is fair game.

Ultimately the fact that ALL Canadian would be indirectly subsidizing such a program to me adds perspective to this issue.

Agreed. I think that is the whole concept of volunteer work. To VOLUNTEER one’s time to serve without pay.

I agree they shouldn't be paid for volenteer work.

However, if you aren't a near retirement doctor odds are you have a heavy debt load, to give some time to help in a case like this could potentially be financially hard for some doctors out there.

Instead of paying them why not give them a tax credit much like donations. They are donating their valuable time after all.

Thats just my "meet in the middle" thought on this

I realize this comment is somewhat of track but what bothers me is that many third world countries offer up free land or land that is next to nothing to major corporations to set up factories to take advantage of cheap labour.

Rather than tax these same corporations at similar rates to North American standards they give them incredibly cheap deals on taxes. End result is they while these countries do end up with some economic benefits due to increased employment the governments themselves lack sufficient revenue to provide proper services for things such as healthcare.

Meanwhile over here in North America we lose the jobs and resulting taxes revenue and now we are paying again with our tax dollars to offset and subsidize the inadequate tax regimes of these countries.

I am not against foreign aid but there should be some conditions. In particular developing countries should be required to establish similar taxation regimes to what is in North America first.

Every doctor that goes to Haiti means health care gets worse here in Canada.

More people will be added to wait lists, surgeries that were scheduled are being put on hold, people needing to see their primary care physician are left to scramble to find a doctor when they need one - even for a prescription renewal, emergency care backs up even more ...

We had a doctor shortage before the earthquake - now we have a worse one.
