Quebecois raise concerns English speaking west right it off as whining.

Why was one little comment an opinion from someone from Quebec blown so far out of proportion.? Is he not entitled to that feeling.? Why was so much offense taken if tolerance as you guy's gals state is what your generally all about.?

IMO Quebec once again got the short end of the stick , yet you guy's view it as whining.

IMO the comment was innocent enough.

i lived in Quebec for 5 years. i guess i should have whined about not enough English? as far as i could see the French didn't give a darn if i could read the signs or understand anything that was being said, so why do they expect special treatment when they are here? most of them expect everyone to speak French (you can't get a job if you don't) but you don't have to speak English. that's a two way street? sure didn't seem that way to me.

Good points.

Basically you can't get away from the fact that you reap what you sow and what Quebec sows more often than not is division.

As far as the Globe and Mail is concerned who cares.

Political posturing by the Heritage minister and Language Commissioner named in the unsigned editorial by an author whose main goal is to sell newspapers and guess what? Conflict sells papers.

BC is hosting these games not Quebec and I'd be willing to bet when the games were in Montreal there probably wasn't much concern regarding native content or representation.

Oh and flyerfan2............ so French is an official language so what?

As far as I'm concerned all that means is you get to have government services in the language of your choice and beyond that it means squat.

All I see coming from you, Charest, and some other areas is that ever present sense of "ENTITLEMENT" and you can see how far that gets you in BC.

There was no representation of Western Canada's culture(native culture) when the games were in Montreal.
Also seeing Quebec speak out like this is more of a *bleep* contest stance done because Quebec City lost the bid to host this year.

The funniest thing I've been noticing is that it wasn't the English speakers protesting over French being the first language spoken in a majority of the addresses(which is was, and fairly so, considering it is what, THE official Olympic language and all games cater to that), it was Jean's speaking up about too LITTLE being spoken that has sparked all this pointless debate. Showing us just how little Quebec cares about the real issues and is more focused on it's "me me me" attitude.

Quebec didn't get the short end of the stick, they got outbid and are sad about it. According to the Olympic committee everything was in accordance to normal Olympic standards. So why all the outrage from Jean?

Well there's one less thing for you to worry about flyerfan2, there won't be any boiling blood for you to stress over as one of BC's own just won a gold medal too. :D

Congrats to her!

You know thinking about it now, Quebec would be far better off if it didn't try to shove the French language down our throats at every opportunity.

Think about it, they pushed into having Quebec alienated on their own, to keep their cultural pride alive I guess. What I mean by this is the votes that even ALLOWED Bill 101(Bill 101 made it illegal for businesses to put up exterior commercial signs in a language other than French at a time when English dominated as a commercial and business language in Quebec (while more than 80% of the population was of French origin)), to come into action. All we English speaking Canadians ask is to be able to visit the Province and feel like we are still in Canada, not some foreign country.

It's no wonder there is so much deeply rooted animosity towards Quebec as a whole, constantly they seek to be under the spotlight, seek to be viewed as special and unique. They want us all to respect them as something special, yet push anti-English propaganda quietly, and god forbid we point that out. They have a HUGE majority representation in our Parliament, more-so than the west coast all together. Yes their population is larger than ours, but all that means is they DO get their attention they need, yet they thrive and beg for more!

And they get massive equalization payments ($8 Billion) from the federal government, far more than any other province.

Thank God I'm not the only one that was shocked at the french first at the ceremonies. *bleep*??? This is BC..we speak english here..this isn't Quebec!! Now i read they are upset not enough french was spoken...are you freaking kidding me??!!!!

Speak french, don't speak french..i couldn't care less but when you force it down my throat every time i turn around, it pisses me right off! French first at the Olympics held in WESTERN Canada...and then *bleep* it wasn't enough...i guess it shouldn't have had any english at all.

I travel quite a lot and when i say we are from Canada I'm always asked if we are french Canadian or western. I always say...hell no..we aren't french Canadian. Seems the only group of people universally hated around the world other than the Americans are the french and FRENCH CANADIANS...Interesting. Their arrogance is astounding and this latest complaint proves it...oh yes, but no english signs allowed over there...the bigots are the french not us...get over yourselves already!!

I believe, you, me, and all Canadians will continue to "bend over backwards", required by the Federal Government and Canadian media (CTV, CBC, etc), for the benefit of bigotry for 'What is Quebec' (1) Province,
among 10 Provinces and 3 Territories.
When really, all we are, all we want to be is -

Canada.

That is all Quebec wants also.!!

It gets tiresome being treated like second class citizens.

I don't know if that is achievable tho with all the hate shown towards Quebec from westerners.

Sorry your feelings are hurt.....get over it. "Westerners" don't hate Quebec, they hate the petty temper tantrums that get thrown over things like 'identity', wanting to be called 'unique' and language. The French language laws in Quebec draw a big black line in the sand - remove this fascist law and then maybe we can talk about what's fair and just.

I think this whole battle is symptomatic of the adversarial relationship created between Anglo and French.

There is legitimate animosity toward Quebec over the lopsided policies of the Canadian Government. The Anglo masses have (IMO) bent over backwards to appease the French in Quebec-to the point where it is viewed as a socialist society paid for by the rest.

There are many parallels with the First Nations. Right or wrong, the perception is that Anglo Canada pays the bills for Quebec and the First Nations. The perception has become that Anglo Canada must bend to the will of Quebec and the First Nations. The perception is that more and more is being demanded and less reciprocated.

The lack of reciprocity when it comes to respect and rules go both ways. Demanding French spoken "more" when there is NO ENGLISH ALLOWED in Quebec is hypocritical and maddening. Demanding land rights and tax exemptions are also a 2 way street. I speak English-don't make me speak French, unless I am in France. There are hundreds of dialects in China-do you think they demand that every speech is translated?

Every person in this country came from another. (Yes I said every person-the first nations can be traced to ancient tribes of South America).

IMO it is time to say "stop". We are all equal in this country. Time that everyone pay their fair share and quit demanding others pay your way or speak your language.

Just my opinion-let the haters begin-can't wait for the "bigot" tag.
