Actually, what I said (and I do believe I stated it pretty clearly) is that we’ve long since recovered from any fiscal ineptitude of previous NDP governments (even the "Fast Ferries" are off the books)

Type_O wrote: I don't believe the Liberal Government has created more debt by following through on the NDP commitment in the Olympics nor, as you pointed out, would it be any cheaper (or more modest) with the NDP in power.

That’s something we can never know, and thus quite irrelevant to the discussion at hand. For clarity though, what I did point out was that given current global economic circumstances taking a more modest approach would be adopting a leadership role – an obvious opportunity missed by our esteemed premier in lieu of his chance for gratuitous self-congratulatory fluff. What a leader.

Type_O wrote: I didn't realize this was comedy.

It is when you make it so. The other alternative, of course, would be to pay attention and try to understand a point before just responding to it. Comedy’s good though.

Well it certainly is turning into a comedy, I'll grant you that.

If it hadn't of been for the NDP winning the Olympic Hosting Award for 2010, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

And, I for one, am tickled pink they did!

I certainly will not place false blame on our "now" Provincial Government, "the Liberals" or as you so often reference to "Campbell" (heck reading these forums - I thought that was the name of the provincial government) who made it happen.

That’s very likely true. I have no reason to deny that (did you think I did for some reason?)

Your welcome!
And all this time I thought you were an NDP die hard.
Love the games -
Love the NDP for Allowing us to hold these game (will never vote for them again -did it once in Ontario- don't ask).
Huh? Imagine that.
Wonders never cease.
Well it's getting late.

Don't worry. Many posters here think that if you oppose or speak out against the current elected political representatives who are committing criminal fraud you must by default be a NDP supporter. Ya, I don’t quite get that “logic” either.

I’m glad you love the games. I don’t mind them so much myself, but when I became an adult I realized there was only so much money and some obligations took priority over others. Because of that I own a house, I am able to travel, and I will be financially secure when I eventually retire. On the other side of the coin, this province is hooped. Nothing that any previous NDP government in this province has done compares to the mess created by this current arrogant (‘we can’t do anything wrong”) regime. I am so grateful I will have the option of moving away once my tenure is done and not have to continue paying for the mistakes of this government (and the electorate). On the plus side for you I’m sure you will have developed and nurtured many psychological defence mechanisms by then to displace responsibility.

Interesting exchange :-) Just one thing..

Type-O wrote: "....If it hadn't of been for the NDP winning the Olympic Hosting Award for 2010, ."...

...I think that deserves a "HUH?" ;-) Perhaps I am wrong, but I thought the 2010 Olympics were awarded under the current Liberal regime, and that the former NDP government merely started the bid effort rolling. There was ample time for this government to rethink it and withdraw before the selection was made (well, VANOC actually) but hey, times were booming, money was easy (particularly the borrowed type), and few thought the good times would ever end. When they did of course it was too late to back down on the commitment (even though some sponsors did), ..so the only thing left was to try to find ways to cut costs, extract some more money out of the taxpayers (carbon tax, transit tax, HST, various fees, etc) and hope for the best.

But I agree with those who suggest the constant "compare everything to the NDP of over ten years ago" has become quite stale when trying to defend this government and it's priorities/economics. This government has enough history now to be judged on its own merits. Just as the 2010 Olympics under their watch will be evaluated 10 years from now as a combination of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Edit to add: Fortunately, I won't be paying much of the bill, but my kids and grandkids and their friends will be. But the more I think about it, perhaps that's the way it should be ;-)

Well this government did finally build us a bridge where all the NDP did was talk about it so I'm grateful for that.

remember the fast ferries :dyinglaughing: and we got a bridge is the battle cry of GORDOs right wing supporters.

As the people of British Columbia, get bled dry by the HST and a carbon tax......and pay for the memory of this great Olympics......remember to tell your grandchildren how great of a two-week event it was............when they fill out their tax forms..............

LOL. When one compares 180 million dollars or so over 30 years or so for a bridge across a puddle at Kelowna, (in an effort to "pave the way" for amalgamation of the Westside - only to have it rejected?), or anywhere else in the province outside the lower mainland for that matter, ...and compares it to the dollars that have been spent or committed in the lower mainland - even just on the Olympics alone - (not to mention the masses of money that has been spent on other stuff that doesn't come out of the Olympics budget but that have been accelerated in time, scope, and cost mainly due to the Olympics)....

...then it do tend to amaze just how easily and cheaply the support and gratitude of Kelownials can be bought these days, even by a non-homegrown boy as Premier ;-)

Except of course you consistently forget (or choose to overlook) funding for Vernon and Kelowna Hospital expansions, UBC Okanagan, doctor training at UBC Okanagan, record funds to expand Okanagan College, record infrastructure grants to area municipalities, record investment in Hwy 97 after decades of neglect. Finishing off the Coquihalla after the NDP refused (not to mention removing the tolls as well) oh, and yes there is also building the bridge that the NDP promised but failed to deliver.

I have lived in the Okanagan for decades and can tell you that NO government has given more and built more in the Okanagan then the one you like to call down. Where I sit it is simply our tax dollars coming back to us instead of building the Island Highway project or UNBC….our tax dollars in those days being spent only where the NDP managed to get elected. There is a reason why the Okanagan continually votes Provincially and Federally to keep the socialist hordes away from the tax dollar treasury and the public sector Unions, and maybe if you and Steven actually still lived in the Okanagan you might better understand it. But complain away all you like. Things are still getting built here.

Ya, I know Al, once more around the circle. I don't overlook or ignore the things you keep referring to as giving some sort of bragging rights. I simply compare them (financially) to what is going on in the lower mainland and suddenly realized just how cheaply loyalty, gratitude, and support for the Olympics in the "heartland" can be bought. ;-)

BTW, I should point out once more that Kelowna has a Cancer Treatment centre, one of the first provided in the Province outside the lower mainland. It was barely completed and becoming functional when this government came to power. Priorities ;-)

But I suppose if we want to discuss in detail such things and what government priorities are important to different people, we should take it to an appropriate thread.

You seem to love to take a ball and reshape it to suit your agenda.

How exactly do you come up with some of this left wing ridiculousness?

I mean bridge over a puddle in Kelowna to support amalgamation?

Had squat to do with amalgamation and a lot to do with us only having one road through the area a part of which was a sinking old bridge.

Get a grip!

I'm not crazy about the decision to host the Olympics and have made it quite clear a few times that I didn't support that decision but the point now is that ship sailed and when I see people *bleep* and whine about the Liberals I simply think back to the NDP and how we kept getting empty promises from them so in that regard I'm grateful for the improvements to the area that we have gotten and continue to get as there are more projects under way such as the long awaited new section of highway from Winfield to Oyama to improve safety.

We've gotten far more than a bridge in our area and the NDP was pretty adept at frittering away money on stupidity too as I recall.

I see plenty of bitching and whining but I have yet to see a viable alternative and as far as I'm concerned the NDP isn't it.

So you're suggesting that because the alternative might be worse we should just shut up and not say anything and not expect anything more (like some honesty or accountability maybe) from the current buffoons wasting our tax dollars, dismantling our public services and amassing staggering debt for us to carry forward to the next three or more generations ? At least we were able to recover from NDP incompetence. We're going to be paying for the corrupt Ineptitude of this regime for the rest of our lives.
