Lyrics to O Canada Might be Changed

Post by Mutha »

It appears that the lyrics to O Canada are going to be changed to be more gender neutral. Canada really is a silly place.

O Canada official lyrics

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!

From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

********************************************************************************************

Looking for places it could be changed ...

"sons command"??

Me, I'd take the "God" out.

I saw on the news that one option was to replace "in all thy sons command" with "with all our hearts command". Not a big deal but I think it works. What the heck ?

I can't imagine the Americans changing their anthem. They would just say "if you don't like it, f$%^ off." (Good for them, too).

Ya, I love that “we’re not going to change no matter what” attitude. Not exactly high on the list of evolutionary traits consistent with the survival of species but sure seems tough at the time.

The change from sons to hearts works for me and (as I mentioned earlier) let's update the words to The Maple Leaf Forever so we can sing that as well. I suggest the lyrics that Anne Murray sang at the last Leafs' game at Maple Leaf Gardens, the same lyrics that Michael Buble used in the closing ceremonies on Sunday.

The Maple Leaf Forever isn't our national anthem, of course, but it could be used as a substitute now and again as the Americans do with God Bless America or America the Beautiful.

Take "god" out of it for a start--replace it with "folks" or "Noodly 'un".

That would make two "hearts" and doesn't flow well.

"In all of us command"

Works for me.

and replace "God keep our land" with "We'll keep our land"

Why does "all" our hearts make "two" hearts ?

Cause there's a "heart" in the next line ...?

O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all our hearts command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free!

From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

We'll keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

See? It doesn't flow well because it repeats itself.
