Is there a god? What is the meaning of life?

You cannot reason someone out of a position that they did not use reason to arrive at.

grammafreddy wrote:Well, actually what I meant was all religions scare children into following whatever their doctrine is.

It kinda goes like this:

"If you do XXX, you're gonna burn in hell." Didn't ever hear that in any church i've attended.
"God won't love you if you XXX" Only heard God always loves you in any church I've attended

"To get to heaven when you die, you have to XXX." Believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins - that' what I was taught in churches I attended.

"You better be good because God is watching you." It is better to be good than to be bad, that's what I learned in Sunday School and churches I've attended. God gives you free will to do as you wish.

"The Devil will get you for that!" Another one I've never heard in any church I've attended.

Get my drift? Those are all statements to scare kids into doing what the religion wants.
What churches have you attended that teach children these things? Or are you just assuming?

I said that wrong...sorry...it was the inlaws who said that and are very strong in the church community.
I never went there nor do I or MY kids...which I have been told will burn in hell because I did not get them baptised.
Not to mention...what kind of parent am I, yada, yada, yada.

I have my own beliefs I follow, but that isn't good enough for them.
Meh...their loss.

You'll be happy to know. Your kids wont burn in hell for any reason. Its funny catholics believe in a fiery hell but few seem to know the pope amended that teaching years ago to , no burning hell just separation from God. I purposely didn't capitalize pope, by the way or catholics. You might discern my feelings about them from that.

The catholics did burn people many years ago though. God didn't.

Just a little point of clarification here ... I did not say "churches" say those things to make kids afraid and to force them to comply with their beliefs through fear. I said "religions" said those things. People form religions and people say those things. Churches are buildings and they lack the ability to speak.

I feel it was the guilt put upon me to join their church for the sake of the kids...that was wrong IMO.
I also understand that not all religious people do this and know some very nice ones.
I am just a bit shocked of the sense of heirarchy and 'better than everyone' attitude from them.

Religions are a bunch of people who form an organization based on a belief system. People ARE the religions. Without people, religions would not exist.
