Teeth Whitening

Post by Bubalouie »

Anyone know if those white strips work? Or anyone have any suggestions....other than a dentist, BF can't afford dentist and would like to try to whiten teeth a bit. Has tried the toothpaste but didn't really do much.

Here is a link Bubalouie. I had heard my Dentist speaking about do it yourself teeth whitening. Most common mistake people make is over use which can result in permanent damage to the enamel. Hope your BF can find a product that works for him.

Consumer Reports did a test a while back. I think (not sure) that Crest was the best one. Check back issues at your local library.

The whitestrips and trays do work for many people.
The most common issue is tooth and gum sensitivity.
In addition to habits such as smoking or eating staining foods such as curry, there are other factors which can affect whether the bleaching product will be effective.
Bleaching products do not work on restorations. If you have white fillings, these will not be changed. So if you have fillings in your front teeth, and you use bleach, the natural tooth will change colour, but the restoration will not. This can leave you with a spotted appearance.
Porcelain crowns and veneers will not change in colour from the bleach and could possibly be damaged by the product. Check with your Dentist before using bleach.

Bleach is effective in removing or reducing external stains.
Endogenous stains (internal) will not be affected by the bleach. If you have a "dead" tooth, the colour you see is from the inside of it. Also, longterm smoking can cause the stain to be deeper inside the teeth and will not be affected by the bleach.
If you have fluorosis or mottled teeth, bleaching may not be effective.

Just a thought>>>> If you bleach out a coffee cup it comes up real nice,, that is until you put coffee in it again then the stains come back and you need to bleach them again and forever. So, it seems to make sense that if you bleach your teeth, yes, they will become white, but like the enamel on the coffee cup, the next time you use anything that can stain, it will with gusto, and you will need to forever be 'rebleaching'
Best bet is to cut out all things that stain in the first place, but if that is not going to happen then try "Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda". Works fantastic and will leave the enamel on your teeth (added plus is that it will heal anything that maybe wrong with your/ his gums)
