I agree, but the legal system, police force and penal system depend on crime for their livelihood, government at all levels want crime to continue so they can exercise control over you, based on the premise that they are "keeping you safe".

I realize it is about American voter turnouts, but I think that it's nice that different viewpoints were promoted and even rewarded when it came to this topic. I haven't as of yet found any local example of these kinds of ideas being presented but rather covered with other so called "more important" topics.

Yes the real argument goes something like this.
It is quite clear that crime pays, it pays the lawyers, it pays the judges, it pays the police, it pays the private security companies, it pays the armed guards on the armored trucks, as well as the armored truck builders, the list goes on and on, and yes sometimes it even pays criminals.
