Good Friday isn't the only day for the advance polls. If someone is against voting on Good Friday then vote on another day.

You seem to have forgotten the non-confidence motion put forward by the Liberals, planned long before the budget was introduced, and the decision made later by Layton to bring down the government. It wasn't a Conservative decision to defeat the government but an opposition one. The government didn't give in to all the opposition demands but enough of them that Ken Georgetti advised Layton to help pass the budget. The government did in fact compromise but the opposition forced an election anyway.

I think some people need to be reminded once again that the Harper government has been the longest and most productive minority government in Canadian history. Harper didn't accomplish that by not ever compromising. It is quite obvious that Iggy just got frustrated and impatient and thought he could take power by introducing boogeyman arguments and convincing the other party leaders to go along. Unfortunately for him, he seriously underestimated the intelligence of Canadians and miscalculated and it seems that it will mostly be the Liberal Party who pays for his arrogance - and rightly so.

Advance poll numbers soar 34% from 2008

More than two million Canadians turned out to cast ballots in advance polls over the holiday weekend, according to Elections Canada's preliminary estimate, a 34 per cent increase from 2008.

Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand said 2,056,001 ballots were cast during the three days of advance polls in a "higher than expected turnout," compared to 1,528,780 advance ballots cast three years ago.

More than 676,000 Canadians voted on Friday and more than 823,000 on Monday — the two busiest days of advance voting ever, the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

And the final tally could be even higher. Mayrand said the overall figure is a preliminary estimate, and some polls may not have reported yet.

There were multiple reports over the holiday weekend of long lines and delays at several advance polling stations across the country, as staff struggled to accommodate the higher turnout.

In his statement, Mayrand did not address those reports, but thanked voters "for their patience" and field staff for their "responsiveness."

More than 826,000 Ontarians voted over the weekend, up from 603,578 in 2008, while in Quebec, advanced poll voting jumped from 448,466 to 565,897, according to the elections agency's estimates.

Only 58.8 per cent of registered voters actually cast ballots during the 2008 federal election — the lowest voter turnout in Canadian history.

Question for Harper: If this is an election that Canadians don't want, why such a high voter turnout over the long weekend? :sunshine:

:129: Because people are fed up with the games being played by Iggy and want to make sure he pays?

Nah, it's usually the incumbent who pays at the polls when there's a high voter turnout. Not that this high voter turnout favours Iggy. On the contrary, I think Jack may well benefit from this higher-than-usual voter turnout at the advance polls. :sunshine:

That is an unusually high turnout, and as I mentioned in the other thread responding to a similar post there,I could indicate that people have already made up their minds and want to tune the campaign out. To my mind as I said over there that speaks strongly to a probably Conservative majority.

I don't see how or why it could or would indicate that at all. Your logic baffles me sometimes...

and yours mine UR...yours mine.

It could be that a lot of people just wanted to vote so that they could focus on the Royal Wedding and put the election out of their minds....as dumb as this sounds, this is verbatim what I heard on CBC Newsworld this morning....

I am sort of leaning in that camp of thought as well. I recall our last Provincial election also had a higher advance poll turnout but in the end that did NOT turn out to more people voting. I think it is more a case of many voters have figured out that voting in the advance polls can be a quicker and less painful exercise. Obviously I could be proven wrong but I doubt we will see a huge increase in voter turnout.

In reality that's probably the reason, as sad as it is.

As for your comment about my logic baffling you Unknown..., surely you don't expect anything closely resembling logic to be involved in Canadian elections and on what basis people decide who to vote for these days do you? :-) Anyway, a simpler explanation for the high turnout at the advance polls may be that they fell on a long holiday weekend, so many people took advantage of that to avoid having to take time off work on the regular voting day. I am of the view that the turnout on Monday will speak more to the turnout issue than the advance polls do. If it is high it will not work to the Conservative's advantage, but if it is similar to last time or even lower then it will.

Why do you think if more people are voting that means the Cons are that much closer to a majority? I see no relation between the two.
