Electile Disfunction
I can recall, on the afternoon that the Harper government was defeated by a non-confidence vote, the rhetoric message from Harper and Conservative MP's, including Ron Cannan, was the same. The message, in part, included the line that this election is completely unnecessary. Further, they attempted to convince us that the non-confidence vote was based on their failed budget.
The truth of the matter is that the speaker of the House (neutral) ruled that the Harper government was in contempt of Parliament; contempt for not being forthright with financial information pertaining to the cost of buying and servicing F35 fighter aircraft, and of the costs associated with building many more federal prisons across the nation. FYI, not only in the history of Canada, but NEVER in the history of any other nation in the Commonwealth... has any government fallen on a contempt of parliament non-confidence vote.
Our system of governance is the parliamentary system. It is a system whereby all important matters are debated. It is the debate in parliament that holds the government accountable. Parliament trumps government!
Steven Harper is tired of the process of debate and accountability. He's demonstrated this in several ways, including suspending government... not once, but twice! Now he's asking us to give him a majority government. When children behave badly, they get a time-out. I say it's time to stop rewarding bad behavior by giving the Harper Conservatives a well-deserved time-out.
Ron Cannan is a good man... but he's just running for the wrong team.
I could go on about why the F35 Fighter is not the right aircraft for Canada's military, and I can opine as to why the proposed expansion of our prison system (the american model) simply doesn't work on so-o many levels. But I'll leave it to you to inform yourselves on these topics. However, I just shutter to think of the billions upon billions of tax dollars these conservatives will spend on these programs, particularly when much of the money could (and should) be better spent elsewhere.
Turn on your TV news and you will see the struggle of so many other people elsewhere in the world who are dying (literally) to have what too many of us take for granted - the right to be heard. Public apathy is a pandemic in Canada... I call it Electile Disfunction. I sincerely hope that all of you who are eligible to do so, will take the 15-or-so minutes to vote.

Ya, Trudeau, Chretien the dictator, and Martin proved that didn't they....
Edit to add: Oh ya, How could I forget Gordon Campbell and Dalton James Patrick McGuinty, Jr. too LOL....
URudolph, welcome to the forums (if you are new here ;-) ), but do we really need to go around the same old circle one more time in another thread with only a day or so left until we vote? Read the other threads, it's all there.

What I detest most about Harper is that he's brought sleazy, US Republican-style politics and tactics to Canada.
Look at how that is working out for Americans.

had to double-check the subject line ... won't say what I original read.

Actually nibs, from my perspective if you want US style politics, we are seeing it in Iggy and layton's style more than Harper's. "Yes we can" or "Rise Up, Rise Up" evangelical sorta stuff that would leave even a Southern US Baptist Minister "green with envy". The lefties have that down pat now, although we know that jackOlayton spent a lot of time going down there to study and record Obama's style and speeches during his campaign for President. You would have thought Jack's time would have been better spent looking after business in our own government chambers, which is what we pay him for, and are obviously getting poor value for our money.

Re: Electile Disfunction
By the way, we all know that the Harper Conservatives would like to eliminate taxpayer subsidies to folk who don't need it, like all politcal parties for example. (Of course the opposition parties didn't like that and forced an election over it that Harper still won).
Now if you are like me in any way, you would probably resent your tax dollars going to subsidize a party (The Bloc) whose sole declared intent is to use it to further their goal of separating Quebec from Canada and making it its own country.
Funny we don't hear a peep from the NDP, the Liberals, or even the Greens in that regard. But then they don't want jeopardize their own position at the taxpayer funded trough, as if it weren't for that money they would be even worse off than they currently are with respect to being able to finance their socialisitic agendas. And if the NDP were so against subsifies of business, why aren't they also against subsidies of politcal interests?
And lets not forget, were it not for the opposition parties, particularly the Liberals, we would probably be well along the path to an elected Senate by now.

I agree Layton and Iggy (and May) are a lot closer to Obama's "give away the country and tax the people much more" style than Harper is - by a long shot.
