Post by Popeye69 »

Well finally!!!
Thank god!
Maybe we can finally move ahead as a country without listening to that whiny leader.

I believe the Quebecers have finally had enough of being painted as out of touch, back water red necks who truly think Soverienty is still an issue. Time to stop believing France has anything to do with you.

Bye Bye Bloc?

It's about freaking time.
As WW3 develops, no one is going to be dissing the "preppers." What have you done?

And who do we have to thank for this? Not Iggy, not Harper, but JACK LAYTON AND THE NDP! The election's barely over and they've already done more to bring this country together than anyone could've imagined just a few weeks ago. Bravo, and thank you, Jack!
I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

Actually I believe if Liberal Party had a better leader the swing away from Bloc would have landed on Liberals. But people of Quebec hated Ignatief as much as they hate Harper so guess who got their votes the other national Party.

This is ALL true. And let's not forget that the Harper majority would NOT have been possible without Jack Layton as well. Jack Layton is our new Conservative Folk Hero and now he get's to be the one catering to Quebec's demands. It stands to reason that a socialist SHOULD be beholder to Canada’s most socialized Province.

From 47 down to 4 seats. Oh happy day.

yes Layton "did it", but he also kissed more *bleep* and licked more sack and anyone else in Quebec. He made some pretty big promises about re-negotiating with Quebec. That man would sell us all out for a vote. Honestly, I don't think I'd have a problem with the NDP if it wasn't for Layton.

That being said, it's interesting to see the huge shift in the politcal landscape. Canada's biggest thorn in our side, the BQ isn't even a minor player. Canada's "Natural governing party" took a serious beating with a man who was less popular than Dion.

I'm glad to see a Conservative majority, even if i don't agree with all their platforms. Although i will admit i have mixed feelings about giving Harper a majority...
So I love the Okanagan but it's a place best enjoyed from atop a very large pile of $100 bills. - Spocky

i love how everyone gives the blame/credit to layton - he had nothing to do with the libs and bloq running inferior campaigns that were out of touch with their support base.

the Bloq KILLED THE BLOQ

the Liberals KILLED the LIBERALS

elizabeth May EARNED herself a seat (and had to neglect the rest of the country to do it)

the conservatives EARNED more seats to get a majority (credit where credit is due even though it pains me that this is our reality)

and jack Layton EARNED more seats to become the official opposition and triple his parties representation in parliament.

Give the NDP blame/credit for a conservative majority is Kinda like giving detroits coaches credit for vancouvers playoff series win.

You clearly do not understand the concept of vote splitting do you? At any rate is all a compliment to jack Layton, as you have alluded too he clearly ran a much better campaign and presented himself as better candidate then Iggy or Duceppe did so kudos to Jack Layton, my new best friend.

I fully understand the concept of vote splitting (its also known as scapegoating)

Credit by default? If the Bloc ran a better campaign the Bloc would still be there (ZERO credit to jack Layton or iggy or Harper for the failing of the Bloc)

Likewise - zero credit to the bloc for the gains in quebec the NDP made

As long as first past the post is the system Canadians use then there will always be the illusion of vote splitting by people that are forced to vote for something they don't really believe in (being Liberals or bloc that are disenfranchised now have to choose between NDP or green) as the best weapon to fight something they are strongly against (cons). and the right leaning libs that have fought the cons for several elections and have lost faith in their party have to vote con to prevent the leftist ideals rearing their heads. No ones ideals change, just the options that fit the ideals don't fit anymore so the lesser evils of personal opinion get picked.

If we are going to give credit than I believe Layton should get all the credit for this election =- he pummelled even harpers gov't in attracting new seats (so I guess Harper failed to garner the same success and congrats should be givin to the bloc for the NDP's victories?

Read this link and educate yourself on vote splitting....

Pay attention to this part....

'Orange Wave'
Defeated by vote splits, Liberals lick their wounds in Atlantic Canada
Oliver Moore
Halifax— Globe and Mail Update

The centre-left has to “get its act together,” one of the veteran Liberals toppled in the election says.

Brian Murphy, a former mayor of Moncton and two-term New Brunswick MP, lost in a three-way race that embodied widespread predictions of a split in the centre-left vote. His riding has been safely Liberal for nearly a quarter-century but strengthening NDP support allowed a Conservative candidate to scoop up the seat with less than 36 per cent of the vote.

Thanks Al - i UNDERSTAND what is commonly reffered to as Vote splitting - I also understand the result of when this takes place. i do not agree with how neatly blame and praise is doled out because of apparant vote splitting. it is people giving their vote to parties or candidates they don't really believe in because they know that the party they would have preferred had no hope so they figure this is the next best thing to do.

IMO its cases like this where people should just stay home rather than to give their vote away to something that doesn't mean that much to them anyways

I didn't tell anyone not to do anything - but if you are putting your principles on the backburner to vote for something you don't really believe in to try to stop something you believe even less in it shows a lack of personal character that I believe is a huge part of the problem with Canadian politics. This is MY opinion. No need to read too deeply into my opinion, especially to the point of me "dictating" how people should vote.

My whole point was that "vote splitting" seems to give people the impression that "credit"/"blame" must be doled out as some sort of explanation as to the outcome.

If liberals are to be considered "center" and someone wants to reject the party there are only 2 directions they can go. More evidently went to the NDP than the cons so now the NDP are to be thanked for the end of the bloc???? How about thanking the liberals for being so brutally pathetic within their own platform (that is where the real credit is due)
