Christmas Cactus

Post by Bubalouie »

I was given a small christmas cactus a couple of years ago in one of those little maybe 3" pots and it is growing ever so slowly. I do get flowers but am wondering, can I repot into a bigger pot, will that help it grow more......also, light or no light..........

My Christmas cacti sit in an east window and get the morning sun. They do very well and flower several times a year. You can definitely re-pot into a larger one but don't go too much bigger.
My Wife asked me if I knew what her favorite flower was?

Thanks .....I have a nice pot for it to go in but it's quite big so I was thinking about getting another smaller one and planting the 2 together ?????

I keep my African Violets in the same window and they flower pretty much all year round.
As long as Mrs Suds leaves them alone!

Those cactus plants can be quite resilient if you treat them well.

I have quite a few & what I have found is that they do quite well if they're a bit root bound (for blooming). But they need fertilzer as well. Every spring I take mine outside, re-pot into a bit bigger pots if needed , fertilize & leave them outdoors all summer - mine face east. They REALLY grow throughout the summer. In the fall before the frost I make sure I spray them with a lot of water before spraying them with insecticidal soap (seems those little tiny spiders like them as well). When they've dried off I bring them inside & place them in a brighly lit window. Keep them watered throughout the winter but not soaking wet. Then in the spring when it's over the frost period put them outside again.

Mine are so huge now I'm not sure where to put them this winter but I know they're going to give me a beautiful display of colour when the dark gloomy days of winter approach. Good luck in your endeavours !

It's possible to do all the right things and still get a bad result.
