School Trustee Moyra Baxter

Post by Trustee Moyra Baxter »

I want to be your Central Okanagan School Trustee for another term, and I will be filing my nomination papers on October 4th.

The reason I want to run again is that I love being a school trustee.

There will be challenges over the next three years, just as there have been in the past. I thrive on challenges.
There are joyful experiences, too, such as seeing a new kindergarten class get their first tour of a school and hearing their trusting and oh-so-wise comments. And attending Graduation Ceremonies and hearing of the hopes and dreams of the students and their families.

There are several important issues that are on the agenda over the next months and years, and I look forward to discussing them and, indeed, tackling them.

If there are any questions or comments I can be reached at [email protected] ; at 250-767-6153; or through this forum - I will check it every day.

Thank you for all your support in the past.

There was a column in the Kelowna Daily Courier this morning suggesting that no-one was really interested in running for school board positions and that school trustees are irrelevant. Well, the number of candidates who have put their names forward for the four Kelowna positions, the West Kelowna position and the position in Peachland/Regional District Central Okanagan West, would suggest that the writer got it wrong.

How do I feel about being up against three other candidates? Yes, it's nice to be acclaimed (and also less expensive!) but having an election has many benefits to the community.

When there two or more people running for the same seat:

It generates media and public interest in public education.

It puts education issues in front of voters.

It provides another opportunity to showcase what's happening in our public schools.

It gives aspiring candidates an opportunity to present their views and ideas.

It raises awareness of the impact that the local Board of Education's policies and decisions have on the economic, social and cultural life of the community.

It emphasises the importance of locally-elected Boards of Education and the need to hear the community's voice at the ballot box.

The work of a trustee is important and it warrants the attention of the whole community.

I look forward to discussing all the issues in the weeks leading up to November 19th.
