All soldiers are wonderful. That’s part of the tragedy of war. The sight of caskets returning from Afghanistan was hard to bear. I can’t imagine the pain suffered by Canadian families in the two major wars of the 20th century.gertlush wrote: Oct 23rd, 2025, 8:01 pm Im a grown man and find it difficult to read about the Somme or Verdun without tears coming to my eyes. I just thought some of the posts there sounded a bit triumphant, how wonderful our soldiers were etc.

Sikh soldiers served with distinction for the British Empire in war, and yet, I see many young Sikhs who neglect to honor them by wearing Remembrance poppies. It's too late to educate them now.workingclasshero wrote: Nov 3rd, 2025, 10:01 am a Sikh soldier that perished in the second world war is getting special recognition from the Sikh community and the Canadian government, I feel that the recognition is not proportionate to the contribution made by the Sikh communtiy, they are advancing their identity and importance in Canada at every opportunity, getting their message on the national news, eroding the Canadian identity

Re: They fought for our freedom
Before Navy SEALs, Delta Force, and the Hollywood era of glorified special operations, there were Canadians who quietly defined what courage and discipline really meant. During the Second World War, Canadian soldiers earned a reputation that even German forces acknowledged — calling them “storm troopers” for their relentless effectiveness in battle. Units like the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, the Devil’s Brigade (a joint US-Canadian commando unit), and the men who stormed Juno Beach at Normandy left a legacy that reshaped how the world viewed our military.
So when I hear people say Canada is broken because Liberals were elected, I can’t help but push back. This is a country built by men and women who stood up when they didn’t have to — who crossed oceans, faced impossible odds, and returned home to quietly rebuild. Despite who they voted for in an election, as brothers. We stand on their shoulders every day. If that isn’t something to be proud of, I don’t know what is.

This actually happened in the First World War.carneyforthewin wrote: Nov 4th, 2025, 9:51 pm During the Second World War, Canadian soldiers earned a reputation that even German forces acknowledged — calling them “storm troopers” for their relentless effectiveness in battle.
They were also called "Shock Troops".

Give it a rest already. How about remembering our sailors and airmen, in addition to the soldiers, instead of politicizing everything.

It’s hard not to sympathize with Alec Penstone’s assessment. If governments have their way, citizens could face fines and imprisonment for speaking out as he did. Every time we allow governments to weaken the rights and freedoms that our soldiers fought for, we break faith with those who died.

Great service again here. Cool wind off the lake but still 150-200 showed up I guestimate.
My Grandfather on Dad's side, Sargent in the Royal Horse artillery G.B. WW1. Survived but with shrapnel in his back and neck he didn't know about until he got an x-ray in the 60's.
My Grandfather on mum's side, mechanic in the REMY'S ww2. Went over in the British expeditionary force in early 1940, evacuated From Dunkirk in June 1940. Survived the war.
Dad did national service in England 1950-52, out in 53 with his commission ( Captain).
Thanks guys

Kudos to Prime Minister Carney for doing this!

Re: They fought for our freedom
I thought I would chime in here and mention that I had grandparents who were in the war. They actually lived in the U.K. My grandma was an RN during WW2 and my grandpa was actually a doctor in Africa also during WW2, so, that would of been the time that Rommel and his gang were there and I think I did ask my grandpa once about his experiences with being a doctor in Africa and he told me the stories of having to fix up young nazi soldiers and a lot of them were just scared kids whom had been pushed into war. They had no choice but to fight because if they didn't, then there families were threatened with visits from the SS and we know how fanatical these types were. But, what surprised me, was when my grandpa told me that he had met some soldiers that were into wood carving. I honestly wasn't aware that soldiers like this would be into that kinda hobby at all, it was a bit shocking to hear
