Oh c'mon....I added the mountain thing for dramatic effect. I dont think I'd want the liability of taking people out in the woods for anything other than pioneer lite like Norma said. A old worn out guy going camping for 3 days with a group of strangers in the woods that have never been to the woods before...What could possibly go wrong?normaM wrote:Mountains already fear me...

Call me. I have a secret.
Really its just about common sense stuff.
Keep some lighters, winter clothes etc in your car . If going on a forest road- bring stuff to get you out of a pinch.
Keep a bug out bag at home in case SHTF. Good for war, earthquake, volcano ,weather event , flood, civil unrest, alien invasion, zombie apocalypse from bad street drugs, forest fire, everything. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it, and not have it.
Like a previous poster said- building a fire isn't hard, not rocket science at all.
Some are actually hard wired to be able to do it. How long have we been doing it for? 1 million years?
Some not so much.
Some don't have the wiring to improvise with what the environment has...I'm sure there are lots that have frozen to death when they didn't need to because there was a wood source and a flame readily available- but they couldn't build a fire...
Interesting link https://www.history.com/news/human-ance ... an-thought
As someone else said, the folks in todays story may have been older or had other issues preventing them from digging themselves out or building a fire to keep warm.
Today's story is actually a success story....it was resolved before it became a problem.

Red Green's good friend Bill made a video on how to build a fire.normaM wrote:Oldtrucker - might I suggest you start us on Pioneer Living Lite?
I'm thinking 2 hours, coffee, you show us how to start a fire.. what side of the trees moss grows on
And we go out for Chinese Food
Whenever I head into Kelowna next, I can pack along a percolator, if you care to try making a fire and brewing some coffee on it.

But I'm outside, I thought that was the whole point of outdoors.Queen K wrote:Maybe you haven't thought this out Alien Soldier, when Skip the Dishes delivers, you'd still need a tent or cabin. Maybe OT can throw in Lean-To instructions for you eat in the lean-to? Then you won't be so "outdoors". Or Skip the Dishes can deliver a tent for the group?

Alien Soldier, you literally said you don't like eating outdoors. What do you do at a BBQ? or a picnic? I'm trying to get OT to throw building an lean-to into his 3 day course just for you to eat indoors.AlienSoldier wrote:
As long as I can still wear skinny jeans, flannel jacket and keep a cool looking beard I am in! Oh and I don't like eatting outdoors, so maybe we just need to bring a phone with skipTheDish app. Then I am in too!

I'd love to know how the pair are doing, are they reading this thread and LTAO's. If they are, OT still has room on his sign up sheet, I'm sure.

Re: Pair rescued on rural road
The best bon fires are the ones left over from land clearing. Brush/wood piles the size of a house. BTW.... ALWAYS check for old tractor tires hiding under the brush pile before lighting it up
Yes....I'm speaking from experience ![:haha: [icon_lol2.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_lol2.gif)

Dear Old Trucker,
Do you empty one or both your trucks fuel tanks onto the burn pile?
I have only been using the one side, but am not getting the fireball I am hoping for

Keep the fuel in your tanks.
Get two 5 gallon pails of diesel- climb up on the pile and pour both pails into woodpile.
Get one pail of gasoline and pour about half into the area you poured the diesel and continue pouring while climbing down the wood pile in a steady path leading away from the wood pile. Make sure trail of gas is at least 50 ft away from pile. Now you have a 'fuse' leading to the main charge of diesel.
Light, run away before gas trail lights main charge of diesel... enjoy.

Stuphoto, I'm sending you home made marshmellows for your new bonfire adventures. And a rather dashing Flame Suit.
Hope it fits, no returns.
